Holika Holika Aqua Petit Jelly BB Review

Hi everyone. Do you like jelly? It's one of my favourite snacks as a kid and I still love it now. So... when I saw the Aqua Petit Jelly BB from Holika Holika, the thought that occurred in my head was: jelly (one of my favourite things)+ bb cream (another one of my favorite things)= AWESOME!!!

The Holika Holika Aqua Petit Jelly BB is available in 2 shades: #1 Aqua Beige and #2 Aqua Neutral. I purchased this bb cream in #2 Aqua Neutral.

The ingredients list and a "do not eat" warning. Note that this bb cream contains Titanium Dioxide which means it will have flashbacks in photos if you use flash. With SPF 20 PA++, this bb cream will be a good one for daytime use.

This bb cream comes with a sponge. Although I prefer to apply this bb cream using my fingers, the sponge is still a nice thing to have since the quality is actually quite good (dense and squishy).

The bb cream is housed in a matte glass bottle that is shaped like a jelly. It's esthetically pleasing but at the mean time, it's not very travel friendly.

A plastic spatula is attached to the lid.

The texture of this bb cream is really unique. It has a jelly-like, wet consistency that wiggles/bounces when you shake it.

Let's look at the coverage of the product.
Bare skin.
After applying one layer of the bb cream. The scar peeked through slightly but the two little red spots were covered well.

I wanted to see if it will cover more prominent redness/ spots so I decided to try using it on my birthmark.
After one layer of the bb cream, my birthmark was still relatively visible but it was noticeably fainter.

CONCLUSION
I had high hopes for this bb cream and it did not disappoint. First of all, I adore the texture of this bb cream. This bb cream is very light and it feels like nothing on the skin. This is my current go-to base makeup because it is so comfortable to wear for hot weather (I live in Malaysia and it's super hot weather all year long, unless there's a thunderstorm).

The jelly-like texture becomes more liquidy as you blend it into the skin. I do find that you need to work this bb cream into the skin a bit more because the texture is not as creamy as a conventional bb cream. One great thing about the Aqua Petit Jelly BB is that it does not have a grey/ashy cast. In terms of coverage, this bb cream has light coverage that can be built up slightly, perhaps up to medium coverage but I noticed that it can look slightly cakey if you build it up too much. This bb cream can cover faint spots or minor imperfections and even out skintone but it won't completely cover dark circles or prominent spots/marks. I do wish that this bb cream has better pore coverage because in terms of pore coverage, I think that this bb cream is mediocre.

The finish of this bb cream is demi-matte, almost velvet like. The finish looks natural and skin-like as it is not too luminous or not too matte. This bb cream can enhance the look of dry patches so people with very dry skin might need to exfoliate and ensure that your skin is well moisturised prior to using this. I have oily skin and I find that this bb cream is average in terms of oil control as my skin started to look shiny after 2 hours of application (it does remain at an acceptable level for 5-6 hours). I do advice blotting every 2 hours or so because the combination of sweat and oil can melt the bb cream and cause it to look patchy.

*update* Tulip Love from Field Of Tulips (her blog link) told me that on her dry skin, this bb cream looked powdery on her cheeks/nose and under her eyes. So people with dry skin might want to give this bb cream a skip.

For those of you who are sensitive to fragrance, note that this bb cream has quite a noticeable sweet floral scent that is detectable upon application.

I was wearing the Holika Holika Aqua Petit Jelly BB in #2 Aqua Neutral in both of these photos. I used Bobbi Brown's Corrector in Light Peach and Estee Lauder's Disappear Line Smoothing Concealer in #2 for my under eyes. I also powdered my skin for better pore coverage with a translucent loose setting powder (by Lancome if I remember correctly).

P/s I got the colour name wrong previously. It's #2 Aqua Neutral not #2 Aqua Natural. My apologies if I confused anyone.

  2. Excellent review! I love how thorough you are. I love BB creams, but I need a lot of coverage. That is always my dilemma. Also the scent would get to me with this particular one. I think they're great if you have nice skin. I love the packaging for this one and what a cool name.

  4. I've never seen a jelly like bb cream. I think the packaging was cute, but I didn't expect the product to be that thick. It does seem to have much better coverage than the american tinted moisturizers.

  9. I have this bb cream too! It's really cute, and I agree that the bb cream makes the skin look fresh and healthy. But since I have dryer skin, it looks super powdery on my cheeks/nose and under my eyes T_T

  10. Oh no. Sorry that this bb cream doesn't work for you. Maybe it might still work during summer time?

  12. Thank you for your sweet comment!! This bb cream cover minor flaws quite well but if it's really really red, I do think you need to go over it with a concealer.

  13. The texture is really jelly-like. This bb cream is definitely more pigmented than a tinted moisturizer, but it feels light on the skin like a tinted moisturizer would.

  14. I like this bb cream when my skin is behaving nicely. I prefer my Skin79 Hot Pink bb cream or Etude House Precious Mineral Sun BB when my skin needs a bit more help ^-^

  26. Hello! Great review. The texture of this foundation reminds me of tapioca pudding. lol. It looks very interesting. Probably not good for me since I have dry patches of skin that it would probably draw more attention to. Also, I need at least medium coverage and dont like when things looked caked on. Oh but the color really blends in well with your skin! And you are right, it doesn't look ashy at all. It really makes your skin look velvety, i like that.

I just started following you via GFC and have liked your FB page btw! I like your blog and will be looking forward to seeing more posts from you!

I have seen this many times in different BB Cream review and I must admit honestly that I have a curiosity to try it for the texture. but now I have many open Bb Cream used and really do not want to create a huge collection of BB Creams thank you very much for your review I gave a more detailed picture of the "Aqua Neutral" color.

  29. I almost ordered this end of last year. It's a good thing I did not, because I have dry skin. It would have not done a good thing to my dry skin, as well as, not too sure about the scent.

  48. I have seen it on ebay and several online retailers if you are willing to go through the hassle of ordering it online.

    ReplyDelete
  49. where u bought this from?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I bought this from a Holika Holika store in Malaysia.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi ;) I need your help. I want to buy this bb cream but I don't know which shade I should choose. I'm using Ettude House Precious Mineral BB Cream Bright Fit W13 and I'm wondering which shade will be similar to w13...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi. I don't have the Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream but from swatches I have seen online, I think that the Holika Holika Aqua Petit Jelly BB in #2 Aqua Neutral might better suit you since #1 Aqua Beige is a very pale shade (I swatched that colour in the store).

Please note that I cannot be 100% certain since I have not tried Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream myself.

    ReplyDelete
  53. How much of this bb cream?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't remember how much I bought it for exactly but online prices for this bb cream ranges from $12-$20.

    ReplyDelete
  55. not bad. :) i think this will be good for those who have a nice skin.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I want to buy this but I don't know if I can because I'm tan and don't think it will work for me. It might be too light, but I want this bb cream so bad!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. The colour of this bb cream is definitely quite light since the one that I reviewed is already the darker one out of the 2 shades.

If your skin tone is not too dark, it might work if you use this bb cream on the centre perimeter of your face then something that matches your skin tone or slightly darker to get the 3 dimensional look.

    ReplyDelete
  58. does the box usually come wrapped in some form of plastic and does the actual bb cream bottle have a seal? Because mine didn't and I wanted to know if that's how it is usually.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Great review! ^^
But i'm still deciding whether i should get this because i have combination skin, so some parts of my face are dry, and some are oily. :/

    Btw, i followed you! :)
    Hope you can follow back!
